A lesson for these tough economic times: A shopper walked into a store recently and was told by the proprietor: “No, I don’t have what you need. I’ve reduced inventory. Business is horrible. I’m thinking about closing.” At another store, the same shopper was greeted by a smiling, enthusiastic, 40-something, obviously well-educated sales associate. He helped the shopper find what he wanted, then asked, “Anything else I can help you with? Winter coats are 20 percent off.”

Martin Scorsese’s award-winning film Hugo is the story of an orphan living in Paris during the 1930s. The boy has inherited his late father’s ability to fix and re-build things from intricate clocks to sophisticated mechanical toys. After his father dies, Hugo is taken in by his drunkard uncle who is in charge of maintaining the clocks at the Paris train station. Hugo soon masters the maze of mechanisms and gears and keeps the clocks running with perfect precision long after Uncle Claude disappears. Rather than be forced to live in an orphanage, Hugo hides amid the station’s ladders, catwalks and hidden passages.

In his book Living a Life That Matters, Rabbi Harold S. Kushner writes of counseling a divorcee who was still angry at her ex-husband for having left her ten years earlier. The poor woman was so consumed with getting back at her ex for all the hurt he had inflicted on her that she could not move on with her life.

Rabbi Kushner finally said to her: “Look at what you’ve been doing all these years. You’ve been standing here in Massachusetts holding a hot coal in your hand, waiting for your ex-husband to walk by so you can throw it at him. Meanwhile, he’s been living happily in New Jersey, and you’ve burned your hand waiting.”

The diagnosis is grim – and suddenly you are aware that your life will end. So what do you do? You can shut down in anger and self-pity – or you can live what is left of your life with a new sense of gratitude, a renewed appreciation for those who are most precious to you.

Brian Doyle writes in his new book, Grace Notes:
“My wife is an art teacher for kids who are really really sick, a job filled with hilarity and pain, a job she loves, a job that makes her shiver and go for long walks in the hills. She spent a lot of time recently doing art projects with a girl who got sicker and sicker and endured oceans of pain and grew more swollen and weary by the day, and one day I came home to find my wife sad to the bottom of her bones. I asked her what was the matter and she said some things that haunt me still . . . “

“She’s being crucified, said my wife. Everything they do to her hurts. All those needles and nails. All the mothers watching and wincing and weeping in the shower later. All the little crucifixions. She just accepts it. She never complains. She gets crucified every day. All the little children being crucified. Why does this happen? Why does this happen?”

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
