In the midst of the horror at Virginia Tech five years ago, there were many stories of courage, generosity, and compassion. None was more moving than that of an engineering professor who gave his life for his students.

Professor Liviu Librescu was teaching his class in Solid Mechanics in Room 204 in Norris Hall. When the gunfire began, Professor Librescu went to the doorway and blocked it. Fifteen students scrambled through the windows as Professor Librescu shouted for them to hurry (one student was killed in the classroom and two were wounded). Never moving from the door of his classroom, Professor Librescu was fatally shot when confronted by the gunman.

Organizers lined up the red chairs along Sarajevo’s main street – one chair for every man, woman and child killed during the three-year siege of the city. The line of red chairs extended for more than half a mile. Many of the chairs were small, representing the hundreds of children who were killed. Many Sarajevans placed flowers, candles and gifts, including teddy bears, on the chairs. This was the first time that Sarajevo had any kind of public memorial service for the slain; many victims had to be buried quickly in parks and soccer stadiums and other impromptu graveyards.

A British Immigration Officer married a woman from Pakistan. Eventually he fell out of love with her. Mom puts off gardening or relaxing with her novel that she’s waited all day to get back to and, instead, sits down with her daughter to help her work out her geometry homework. After a couple of hours of her patient and clear explanations, she finally grasps the theorems and is able to complete the assignment. Mom is not the numbers she has mastered or the theorems she explains – she is a loving mother who wants the best for her daughter and will do whatever is necessary, with joy for her happiness.
