There is a story told about the great 13th-century Saint Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers. According to the tale, Friar Dominic made a pilgrimage to Rome where he was welcomed by the pope. The pope took his guest on a tour of the beautiful basilica of St. John Lateran. The donors are broken down by class year and level of giving. And you look. The fundraisers and development officers know you look. That’s why they compile the list and send it to everyone. You look to see how your gift measures up to those of your classmates. You look to see who doing’s well – and who’s not – and where you place among them. You look out of curiosity, pride and self-satisfaction.

Students formed study groups and spent hours reviewing the material for the final exam. Most students were able to work through the questions, but the final question stumped everyone: What is the name of the person who cleans your dorm?
