Throughout their married life, he was the strong one, the outgoing one, the one who made the major decisions. She was painfully shy and retiring, even fragile. They had eloped because she could not face having a public ceremony.

From the moment he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, he was concerned how his wife would manage both his illness and the possibility of his death. He could not imagine how she would be able to deal on her own with the needs of their children and with the demands of overseeing the business he had built.

A rabbi and cantor are preparing to lead their congregation for Yom Kippur’s services. The rabbi beats his breast and intones, “I am nothing, O Lord; I am nothing.” The cantor then beats his breast and sings the prayer, “I am nothing, O Lord, I am nothing.” Then, from the back of the synagogue, a third voice is heard. The janitor, head bowed, takes up the prayer, “I am nothing, O Lord; I am nothing.” The rabbi whispers to the cantor “Look who thinks he’s nothing.”

At a toll plaza just outside a major city, every morning there would be a very short line of commuters at five of the six toll booths – but a very long line at the sixth. On a busy morning, in bumper-to-bumper traffic, why would anyone drive up to a long line, when there were five much shorter lines available? Because of the toll taker in that sixth booth!
