A king had a beautiful hawk that would accompany him on his hunting trips. Returning home after one particularly grueling trip, the tired and thirsty king came upon a mountain stream. The king dipped his cup into the flowing water. As he brought the cup to his lips, the hawk suddenly swooped down and knocked the cup out of his hands. A second time, the king filled his cup from the stream – and again the hawk dove at the cup. The king tried a third time to drink from the stream and the incorrigible hawk again stopped the king from drinking the water.

A surgeon and his wife were invited to dinner at the home of friends. The surgeon was enjoying a drink in the kitchen as his host was about to carve the roast. “Would you like to do the honors, Doc?” his friend said. The surgeon politely declined.

As he carved the roast, his friend teased, “So how’s my technique, Doc? I think I’d make a pretty good surgeon, huh, Doc? It’s all in the wrist. You know, I make take your job.” The doctor laughed good-naturedly, having endured this kind of humor many times before – an “occupational hazard” in his field of medicine.

A reflection on Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32

The most moving – some would say “human” – moment of the recent Lance Armstrong interviews with Oprah Winfrey came when the disgraced cycling champion talked about the moment he finally realized he had to end the lies. The moment Armstrong knew he had to come clean:

“I saw my 13-year-old son Luke defending me and saying, ‘That’s not true. What you’re saying about my dad is not true,’” Armstrong remembered. “That’s when I knew I had to tell him.”

Oprah asked him what he said to Luke. Struggling to compose himself, Armstrong recalled:

“I said to Luke, ‘Listen, there’s been a lot of questions about your dad, about my career, whether I doped or did not dope. I’ve always denied that and I’ve been ruthless about that . . .’ “And, I told Luke…Don’t defend me anymore. Don’t”

And Luke responded: “Ok. Look, I love you. You’re my dad. This won’t change that.”

In November, the director of the nursing program at a Massachusetts college received an unusual offer from one of the school’s alumna. The alum, Martha Keochareon, was dying of cancer and wanted to know if any students wanted to do a case study on a hospice patient. Two student nurses agreed to take on the project. They asked many questions and Martha answered them all.

For Martha, a nurse for twenty years, her time with the students was an opportunity to do one more time what she loved best as a nurse: teaching other nurses; for the student nurses, it was an opportunity to experience something that is not typically part of a nurse’s training: spending time with the dying.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
