6:30 AM Mass...what do you think

Dilbert is Scott Adams’ daily comic strip depicting the absurdities and incongruities of life in corporate America.  In a recent strip, Dilbert, the ever patient, put-upon engineer, is interviewing a candidate for a sales position with the company.  “You look good on paper,” Dilbert remarks, reviewing the man’s resume, “but how do I know you aren’t lying about your skills?”  The candidate’s response is unsettling, to say the least.

“You should hope that I am lying,” he maintains.  “Studies show that people who exaggerate their credentials tend to be more effective once hired.  That’s because misleading people is a valuable business skill.  For example, I might need to convince our customers that our products are better than the competition.  Or I might need to dupe some idiot into leaving my cubicle so I can concentrate.  Anyone can learn technical skills, but lying is an art form.”

You have just said “No” to your teenager.  Homework trumps going to the mall with her friends; going to his buddy’s unchaperoned party on Saturday night is not going to happen; the commitment your son or daughter made to babysit for the family down the street will be honored despite the unexpected opportunity to go to King’s Island.  Your “No” has been met with a slam of the bedroom door, an angry stalking off, and silence.

Because many of the time and travel demands of his position, the 55-year-old CEO had missed too many of his children’s birthdays, ball games and recitals; he was not home many evenings during the week when kids need their dad.  And when he was home, he was closeted in his office with his laptop and phone.  Then he came across an interesting statistic:  The average person lives to be about 75 years old.  Multiply 75 by 52, the number of weeks in a year, and the total is 3,900.  That’s 3,900 Saturdays in the average life span.  Doing more quick math, the CEO realized he had about a thousand Saturdays left until he turned 75.  His computations were a wake-up call.

Mattie Dixon didn’t have a will; she hadn’t taken care of anything.  She was eighty-nine when she died.  She didn’t have children; she was a widow, and she had some distant great-grandnieces, nephews, cousins maybe.  They didn’t attend the funeral; they didn’t really know her.  They didn’t know what to do, what would happen to the house, the property and the mementos, the personal effects.

Finally, the taxes had to be paid; other bills had to be paid.  The auctioneer came, and strangers crawled around all over the personal effects of Mattie Dixon.  There was her wedding ring, one of those heavy ones.  When she was alive, if you said to her, “Mattie, I love that ring, I’ll give you a thousand dollars for it,” she would turn that ring on her finger and say, “Fifty-six years of marriage, and you want to buy this?  I wouldn’t sell you this for ten million dollars!”

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
