We don’t even see them.  They melted into the background long ago: the panhandlers we pass on our way to the office, the shadows huddling to keep warm in the alleys, the homeless wandering along the streets lugging their bulky garbage bags.

They are numbers to us.  Prospective sales.  Dependable votes.  Potential opposition.  We define them by labels we have devised based on any number of demographics.  Their value is in what they can do for us.

There is us and there is them.  The cool kids – us – and everyone else.  The jocks.  The math and science nerds.  The band geeks (I was one of them.)  And the kids who sit alone in the cafeteria and library and classroom.

A few years ago, a college student was convicted of smuggling several thousand pounds of marijuana into the country.  The student had created quite an effective system for procuring and distributing the marijuana.  The judge who heard the case did not sentence the student to jail – instead, the student was sentenced to set up and run a hospice for AIDS patients.  The logic?  The city needed the hospice, and the convicted smuggler had the organizational and business savvy to make it happen.

In her book Wouldn’t Take Nothin’ for My Journey Now, the poet, author and actress Maya Angelou remembers an acting lesson early in her career:  “One day my teacher, Frederick Wilkerson, asked me to read to him.  I was twenty-four, very erudite, very worldly.  He asked that I read from Lessons in Truth, a section which ended with these words: ‘God loves me.’  I read the piece and closed the book, and the teacher said, ‘Read it again.’  I pointedly opened the book, and sarcastically read, ‘God loves me.’  He said, ‘Again.’

A frog found himself trapped on a large lily pad surrounded by hungry alligators.  His only hope for escape was to hop over the hungry reptiles to the next lily pad.  An owl, perched on a branch overhead, suggested, “Why don’t you just take off and fly?  Just fly to the next pad.”

The desperate frog got a running start, flapped his legs as fast as he could, lifted off – and came right down in front of the massive jaws of a giant alligator.

“Stupid owl!” the frog screamed.  “Frogs can’t fly!”  “Please,” the owl said disdainfully, “that’s an implementation issue.  I only deal in concepts.”

A minister was invited to preach one weekend at a large New York City church.  The pastor offered him the use of his apartment for the weekend.  He arrived on Saturday and settled in.  He found a note on the refrigerator door:  If you usually eat breakfast, you can go to the church, we have a breakfast for the homeless.

Early Sunday morning, the visiting preacher walked down the street to the church, in a dangerous part of New York, and stood in line with maybe two hundred people, waiting to be served.  He struck up conversations with those waiting with him.  “Well, what’s put you in this situation?”

“Well,” one man said, “its alcohol. Might as well be honest with you, its alcohol. But I’m dry now.”  Several people shared stories of illness, financial disaster, unemployment, divorce, broken relationships.  Then someone asked him the same question.   He responded “I was invited.”  Then he ate with them and got to know them a little more before going to church.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
