Memorial Day is the traditional “Start of Summer” holiday. As the calendar reaches the end of May, the grills start to get pulled out of the deep recesses of the garage where they have spent their long winter’s nap, ready to cook out under the sky. It is such a wonderful time to celebrate the end of Spring and dive headfirst into the joys of Summer, especially after the Winter we have had!

To begin, I cannot stress enough how excited I am to be here. I always introduce myself as ‘Vocation Director,’ and now I am excited to add ‘Pastor of St. John Neumann!’

This week, I celebrate ten years as a priest. My first two years were spent teaching at Elder High School, and I have served the last eight years as Director of Vocations. I finally get to do what we are trained to do, which has led to some of my friends quipping: ‘You’re finally a real priest!’

The initial question I have gotten over the last week is: ‘what do you want to do?’

What struck me is Philip’s question to Jesus in this Gospel passage: ‘Show us the Father, that will be enough for us.’ This is a question that I think continues to haunt the soul of the believer (and non-believer!): that desire for deep communion with the Father.

The role of the priest, the role of the pastor, the role of the parish is to do just that: to show the Christian people entrusted to his care the unique and dynamic love and concern of the Heavenly Father.

In order to help you get to know me a bit better, thought I would take the opportunity to give a brief biographical sketch in this initial column.

I was born in raised in Botkins, Ohio, a small town about 50 miles north of Dayton, where my parents and four of my five siblings still live. Growing up just a block away from Immaculate Conception Parish, the Church was always very much a part of our lives and some of my fondest memories from childhood revolve around moments of our family praying together, celebrating the Sacraments, and just being around the parish and the faith.

We give thanks to God for the gift of Mary and for all mothers.
Loving God,
Thank You for giving me the gift of a lifetime; my mother. Hers is the greatest human love I will ever know. She is always putting my needs first. Teaching me, and showing me, what is just and what is worthy. It is Your will to leave life’s prints, on the generations You give forth: Forgiveness that comes naturally. Seeking within for all answers. Knowing that the universe respects a pure heart.  I am humbled by the experience of following my heart in moments of joy and inspiration. Thank You for giving me the gift of a lifetime; my mother. Grant this through Christ our Lord.  Amen

In Luke’s Gospel, the first time Jesus makes himself known after his resurrection is not at the tomb or in the temple or in Jerusalem.  It’s in someone’s kitchen, at a meal when Jesus and two friends break bread together.  For the first Christians, this story was cherished as they celebrated the Eucharist – Sacrament with a capital “S.”

But the Risen Christ is also in our midst when we gather with one another at our family tables to break bread, to pray together, to “mark” the love that binds us together as family – sacrament with a small “s,” when we realize the presence of God in the everyday and the ordinary, in the simple and the comfortable.  On this Sunday of the Easter season, may we re-discover Jesus with our loved ones at our family tables.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
