6:30 AM Mass...what do you think

By Fr. Kyle Schnippel on 7/27/2014 2:33 PM

As Alex and Elias have settled in to life here at St. John Neumann, it has been interesting to experience life in the United States through the eyes of two men who are adjusting to life in a new culture. Everything is new, in so many ways: Kroger; food; simple gadgets that we have here are totally new, such as a coffee maker, even!

Yet, as we were talking together, Alex had a great insight: the Mass is the same. What a beautiful and deep insight this was, too. This is the bond that unites us across the world as Catholics, no matter where we go, the Mass unites us. Even if being said in a different language, we are able to follow along simply by the flow of the rites that are being celebrated. This should give us great comfort in uniting ourselves with our brothers and sisters across the world.

As I have continued to get settled in to the parish over the summer months (especially now that I am not running downtown on a regular basis!), the feeling of welcome and hospitality has been great to receive. It is with the eyes of someone new here that I have been looking over things so far just to get a sense of how we, as a parish, welcome the stranger into our midst. After all, the sign on Mill Road continually reads ‘All are Welcome!’ and this short statement provides a fantastic lens through which to view so many of our parish activities.

With the very last words of St. Matthew’s account of the Gospel, Jesus instructs the Eleven to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

This Missionary Mandate that Jesus issues to His closest Disciples has been handed down to us, today, too, as Pope Benedict reminded in his writings and talks: “The Church exists to be missionary!”

This weekend, we are blessed to welcome Fr. Ruffino of the Comboni Missionaries to share the important work of this community, whose members leave everything to go and follow Jesus. The witness and presence of missionaries in our Church is a great reminder that our brothers and sisters in Christ are not just those who sit next to us at Mass, but that we are all part of one family in Christ across this great planet. In Christ, we are as close to those in Africa, Asia, Latin America; as we are to our next door neighbor.

This Sunday, July 6th, eight of our parish high school students will be embarking on a trip to Detroit for the Young Neighbors in Action (YNIA) Mission Trip.  For the next week, our teens will be participating in daily service to the community.  They are going not just as individuals, but as members of our parish community here at St. John Neumann.  It is a privilege to work with young people who are willing to sacrifice a week of their summer to grow in their faith.  Our group is looking forward to serving this week at the St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen.  We will be serving lunch daily to those in need, providing clean up after meals, and will also be helping to clean the inside and outside of the facility.    If time allows, our students may also be volunteering at a nearby school to help prepare the classrooms for the fall.   No matter what work our team experiences this week, they will find God’s presence in their service to people in need.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
