Over the last few weeks, we have talked a great deal of prayer; especially as the readings at Mass are so much about judgment and the final coming of Christ. Prayer is, ultimately, about getting to know Christ better, growing in relationship with Him, and growing to love Him more and more.

But! (I can already hear you say) “We are already feeling like Jesus’ disciples when they ask Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples!’” As a native of the ‘digital continent,’ this is where those little gadgets that we (nearly) all carry around in our pockets can come in handy. Instead of just using smart phones for Angry Birds and Candy Crush (I admit, I quit playing both games), there are some great Catholic apps that can foster a prayer life and ongoing communion with Christ and with the Church.

It strikes me that we easily pray ‘with’ one another in the Church. After all, Mass is a communal prayer and we pray as one the ‘OUR Father.’ There is a comfort, I think, in praying together, for it is a constant reminder that we do not walk this journey alone, we are constantly surrounded by friends in the Faith, family really, who encourage us when we are down, celebrate when we have an accomplishment, and generally just support us all in our journey of faith.

However, there is an aspect of this community of faith that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle: the importance of not only praying ‘with’ another, but also praying for the other. In some ways, this is an easy thing to do: when someone is in crisis, it is very easy to offer ‘I will pray for you!’ as a comfort and hopeful solace to the other; but do we actually follow up on that statement? When someone passes from this life to the next, we very easily offer a prayer for their final journey to be short and relatively painless; hoping that they will return the favor and pray for me when I make that journey!

This history of the Papacy is long and complex. There are great popes among some of the earliest saints venerated (non-Apostolic edition!) who helped to navigate those troubled waters among the first generations of the faith. After the legalization of Christianity by Constantine, Pope Saints lead to a rebuilding and re-foundation of Europe. During the Middle Ages, the wealth and trappings of the Office became such a strong lure that the powers that were during the time fought battles over who would be the next Vicar of Christ.

At the very end of Matthew's account of the Gospel, Jesus instructs the Apostles to go to the ends of the earth to proclaim the Good News, baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

That commission spurred on the Twelve to begin the evangelization of all the peoples of the world, starting with the Roman Empire, slowly spreading throughout Europe and North Africa and eventually included Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and, of course, the Americas as missionaries traveled with the earliest explorers to preach Jesus Christ to the new peoples they encountered along the way.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
