As we continue to bask in the glow of the Christmas Season, it strikes me that the contrast of expectations versus reality continues to be highlighted. The Jewish leaders at the time Jesus was born certainly did not expect the Messiah to be born in such a way as this, hence we see such a surprise on King Herod’s face when the Magi approach him in a few short weeks.

As this edition serves for both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas, on behalf of the staff here at St. John Neumann, I would like to extend a warm and joyous Christmas greeting to all of our parishioners and guests! I cannot truly express the joy and gratitude that I feel in being here at St. John Neumann for the last eight months. After ten years of non-parochial ministry, I finally feel like a spiritual father of a family in serving as pastor here; no longer just that crazy uncle who has to sit out in the garage for Christmas dinner!

This weekend, the third rose colored candle of the Advent wreath is lit and we ‘rejoice’ that the salvation to be brought about by the coming of Christ is near! Therefore, our penitential practices of Advent should take a bit of a ease for today as we begin to look for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Our preparations are nearly complete, Christ is coming!

As Christ came, all of heaven and earth rejoiced! Our long wait for a savior was over and salvation history was taking a new leap forward. So great is God’s love for us, He desires to restore us to an even greater place than what was lost by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. He is bringing us to a heavenly inheritance! We should rejoice that this salvation is near!

Last weekend, in my homily, I encouraged us all to keep Christ truly at the center of our preparations for Christmas. This is an easy thing to do, in theory, much harder to do in reality. Therefore, I would like to give a few practical suggestions on how to make this happen in our world today.

To begin, the adage ’tis better to give than receive’ is particularly apt when it comes to the Advent Season, for Jesus comes to give completely of Himself. Trying to do hidden acts of kindness in family life can be a great preparation for Christmas. With younger children, this can be done by having an empty ‘manger’ that whenever something is done in secret, a piece of straw or grass or a strip of bedding is placed in the crib to prepare a welcome resting spot for the Christ Child. This can easily start to pay dividends across family life as we try to think more of others rather than the self.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
