Memorial Day, the traditional start of summer, is a wonderful day to remember and give thanks for those who have come before us. I remember as a child, we would visit the graves of great-grandparents and other relatives to place flowers and pray together as a family. We also remember, in a particular way, those who gave the ultimate price in service to our country and laid down their lives so that we can continue to enjoy the freedoms we have here. Having recently finished a long podcast series on the First World War, I am ever aware that we stand on the shoulders of giants, both in our faith and in our country. We are truly blessed to be in this country and let us never lose track of the many gifts that have come our way.

This weekend, three men are being ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, a cause of rejoicing for all of us! Fr. Ethan Moore, Fr. Eric Wood and Fr. Adrian Hilton are wonderful men and it was an honor to walk with them for a time as their Vocation Director. They join two other men ordained earlier this year: Fr. Andrew Cordonnier and Fr. Thomas Wray, as the priestly class of 2015 for the Archdiocese.

The cultivation of vocations to the priesthood and religious life is a great gift of a parish to the local and wider Church, and is something that should be in our constant prayers and endeavors: who among us, here, has the gifts that would make for a priest or a religious?

As I write this, it is hard to believe that it has already been a year that I have been here at St. John Neumann! It is that strange combination of feeling like it has always been so versus also it was just yesterday that I was the New Guy! Everyone here has been extremely welcoming and gracious and kind to me over the last twelve months, and I could not be happier to continue on as Pastor of the Pastoral Region of Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann!

As of writing this article, I do not have the final tally for the Capital Campaign, but I want to pass along my deep gratitude to those who helped bring the Campaign to a successful completion, as well as the well over 100 families who made contributions to the Campaign. The generous response on the part of parishioners has been a source of tremendous inspiration to me and every gift to the campaign is deeply appreciated!

Last week was a spate of Sacramental celebrations! Thursday, April 23, we gathered with the parishes of Corpus Christi and St. John the Baptist, Dry Ridge, to celebrate the Confirmation of our Eighth Grade students as full members of the Catholic Church. Bishop Binzer presided and led our young people in a beautiful out pouring of the Spirit.

Last Sunday, April 26, we welcomed our Second Graders to the Table of the Lord to receive Holy Communion for the first time. Time and again, celebrating these milestones with our young people brings such joy not just to them, but to their families, to me as a priest, and to our entire parish. Our First Communion celebration was a wonderful example of our parish praying together and celebrating together and left many with inspired hearts.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
