Parenting:  What did I do right, what could I have done better?

My work and my ministry includes support for the Formation Ministry, helping parents in forming their children in our faith.  Often, this causes me to reflect on my own parenting, specifically in the area of faith formation.  The truth is, I could have done better.  In our home, we prayed together – grace and evening prayers when the children were small.  Most other prayer was reserved for church.  We attended Mass weekly and the children attended weekly CCD, as well as preparation for sacraments.  I am very sad to have to say that I provided my children with only the basics and, I now realize, an immature faith formation

As you were visiting our beloved parish this weekend, did you look around with smiling eyes and think to yourself…”boy, this place is beautiful!”?  I certainly hope you did, but if you didn’t have no fear!  St. John Neumann is prepping to beautify our worship space.

Beginning this Monday, October 19 and stretching into the next two weeks, The Painting Contractor will be painting the nave, the gathering space, the vesting sacristy, and around the church.  Along with the ladders, scaffolding, and painters tape, please be on the lookout for signage to guide you to your destination…and watch your step!  Weekday masses and meetings will be held as normally scheduled, but they may be in different locations throughout the week.  St. John Neumann appreciates your understanding and flexibility during this time.

We have been blessed this past month by the visit of Pope Francis here in the United States. His presence in Washington D.C. and at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia has left a mark on the hearts of all Americans. People look up to Pope Francis; he is easily one of the most loved public figures of the last several years. It is almost impossible to come across someone who doesn’t like Pope Francis. Why is that? The world would say it is because he is changing the Catholic Church, making her a more welcoming place of love and acceptance. They would say we used to be strict and close minded but that Francis has finally come along and fixed things.

In the Gospel of Mark this Sunday, October 4th, Jesus bluntly states that divorce was never a part of God’s plan.  “The man who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her..…”  Now that sounds way too strict for many ears.  Our Church has struggled from the beginning to be faithful to Jesus’ word in its teaching on the indissolubility of marriage.  The Church does accept that divorce is at times unavoidable and necessary and does not exclude anyone because of divorce.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
