The end of January always has a rather somber tone for me. Hundreds of thousands of our brothers and sisters are marching in Washington, DC, over these days (and over the last few years, many other cities have joined suit, too!) to witness to the great beauty of the gift of life and in prayer for an end to legalized abortion in our country. As we gather this weekend, we join them in prayer and solidarity as well.

As one who was born during the ‘Abortion Age,’ one of the things I have realized is that a quarter of my generation and younger has been eliminated by the scourge of abortion in our land. I think of how many of my brothers and sisters were never given a chance to take a breath, to fulfill the plan that God had for them, to contribute to society, to love those they met; and I am deeply grieved at their loss.

Ah, yes, the return of Ordinary Time. There is not much to celebrate, so we get the green vestments back out and start our cycle through the Gospel of Luke for this year. Back in the seminary, we would joke ‘What’s so ordinary about Ordinary Time?’

Indeed, it is not necessarily ordinary, for we do get to celebrate extraordinary things every weekend: the God of the Universe, in His great love for us, comes to us in a real and tangible way through the Scriptures and the Eucharist. This is certainly way beyond just ‘ordinary’!

The end of the Christmas Season and the return of Ordinary Time (even if this session of Ordinary Time is super short!) is always a little bit ‘ho hum’ for me. We celebrate so many great things through Advent and Christmas, and then back to green…  Alas…

But the fact that we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord as the transitional day is somewhat important, I think.

To begin, it is important to recognize that Jesus begins His public ministry in such a overt way. This is a positive step He takes to inaugurate His journey towards the Cross. It is His positive affirmation of the utterly unique and vital role that He will play in the history of Salvation. The statement by the Father at the end of this passage is the acknowledgement of that role, too: ‘This is my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased!’

As we gather today to celebrate this Feast and the close of the original Twelve Days of Christmas, we journey with the Magi and bring our gifts to lie at the feet of the newborn Savior.

It seems that there are always so many little things to recognize and see and celebrate during these days, it seems that every line of the Scriptures that are presented for us during the Infancy Narratives is vitally important and reveals so much to us about the role and mission of Christ; it can be difficult to pull out just one theme or thought to reflect upon.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
