6:30 AM Mass...what do you think

This week, I just need to catch up on some parish details and matters, my gratitude for your patience!

First, many thanks to our RCIA candidates at both parishes for understanding the cancelation of our trip to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election. The sudden snow storm on the afternoon of February 14th presented a significant travel challenge. We were able to celebrate the Rite of Election for both Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann at the 9:00 Mass at St. John Neumann this past weekend. In particular, it was good to see the RCIA Team from Corpus Christi come over to support the candidates. This also presented a nice balance to the Easter Vigil being celebrated at Corpus Christi this year.

My Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you as we prepare to enter into this season of Lent.

In his Papal Bull announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites the Church to observe the season of Lent with these thoughts in mind: “The season of Lent during this Jubilee Year should also be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy.” He continues, “So many people, including young people, are returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation; through this experience they are rediscovering a path back to the Lord, living a moment of intense prayer and finding meaning in their lives. Let us place the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the centre once more in such a way that it will enable people to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands. For every penitent, it will be a source of true interior peace” (17). I share this hope that we come to know God’s mercy and find interior peace for our lives particularly through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

So often when we talk about Mercy, especially in an American context, there is a sense of a ‘letting off’ for some type of guilt. In a sense, it can be summarized: ‘I am merciful, because though you have wronged me, I will not hold a grudge!’ The focus is entirely on the merciful judge, and the one receiving the mercy is just hoping not to get squashed too severely!

When we bring this idea and notion to our relationship with God, however, it does not translate all too well. Because our country has some fairly strong Protestant roots, there is this constant underlying tenant that can best be summed up in the novel ‘Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God.’ In that work (which is decidedly NOT Catholic!), God is watching from Heaven, waiting for us to make the slightest mistake, and then KABLAMO! He strikes! Condemning to Hell and scorning any plead to mercy and forgiveness.

Last week, we discussed the Corporal Works of Mercy, recognizing that unless we take care of the most basic needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ, we can cannot assist them on to the higher things. This week, the Spiritual Works of Mercy direct us towards those higher things, and I would like to address them briefly today.

Doubt and questions mark our journey of faith. Listening to and counseling the doubtful can assist the one caught in the darkness of despair to help him or her find the way back to Christ. Jesus is the Light shining into the darkness of our hearts; lending a ready ear and offering gentle suggestions to the struggles of faith can go a long way to bringing that comfort that only Christ can provide.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
