As we continue through the Easter Season (and our celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation, as noted last week!), we continue to see the early Church grow in the Acts of the Apostles and the we hear the visions of St. John the Apostle related in the Book of Revelation. (There are some fantastic saints celebrated during this time of year, too!)

When I read through both the Acts of the Apostles and the Book of Revelation, one thing that strikes me is the amount of persecution that is related in the early Church. But the tale of the persecution of the Early Church is never told in a ‘woe is me!’ type of way. Rather, ‘the Disciples rejoiced that they were found worthy to suffer for the sake of the Name.’ They rejoice in their suffering for the sake of Christ Jesus. And I complain when I am out of breakfast cereal…

As we continue to celebrate the Easter Season, we also continue to celebrate a number of Sacraments. Both this weekend and next, we welcome our young people to the Altar of God for the first time as they celebrate their First Communion. Later in the month, we will gather as a Pastoral Area to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with our eighth graders. These are both wonderful sacraments to celebrate as both separate parishes and as a pastoral region.

To begin, the celebration of First Communion is such a joyous day, for each parish, for our young people, and for me as a priest, too. As the priest, it is an unique opportunity to see the love these lovely young people have for Jesus Christ as they receive Him for the first time. There is something pure, special and unique about this opportunity. I think it is also a great chance for those of us who have been receiving Holy Communion for a long time to remember our own First Communion and tap back into that joy we might have once had and is now faded.

In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, April and May are ordination seasons. Diaconate Ordinations are held every year on the last weekend of April, with the men being ordained priests during the third weekend of May. It is a wonderful celebration of the Lord’s continued presence in the local church and a wonderful thing to celebrate for the home parishes of the men chosen to serve in such a way.

In my time as Vocation Director, it was a distinct honor to be able to stand in the sanctuary of the Cathedral every year as these men completed their formation for the priesthood and we welcomed to the altar as brother priests. As I was there longer, it was then a great honor to see men I worked with make their way closer and closer; and the classes that are being ordained now are men I walked with prior to the entrance to the seminary. It makes me feel like a proud papa to see how they have grown into the priesthood and are now working tireless in the vineyard of the Lord.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati will be taking up The Catholic Relief Services Collection on April 9 and 10. This collection funds six Catholic agencies that work to serve Jesus in the disguise of our suffering brothers and sisters around the world. These agencies provide a broad range of services, including advocating for immigrants, providing humanitarian aid in the wake of natural disasters, resettling displaced individuals, and working for increased peace in our world. Your support of this collection is an opportunity to help Jesus in disguise.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
