6:30 AM Mass...what do you think

It seems that no matter the profession, there is one constant that covers everyone: continuing education. I am away this weekend for a conference and will be gone again the first week of August for another conference.

This weekend, I am attending the annual Courage National Conference in Washington, DC. As I have talked about previously, Courage is an apostolate for those who experience same sex attraction and are seeking to live within the bounds and practices of the Catholic Church. It is a somber gathering, as the participants who come know that they need the grace, power and mercy of Christ. Yet, it is a gathering filled with hope. Hope that the power of Christ will conquer that which separates us from Him and from one another. Hope that our own past mistakes do not determine our future outcomes. Hope that together we can find the freedom that comes in being a son or daughter of God.

This week on Tuesday, we begin something new in the pastoral region of Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann. In order to ease communication and to build stronger ties between the two parishes, there will be one common meeting night for all commissions and councils that meet regularly at the two parishes. From here on out, the third Tuesday of the month is now dedicated as ‘parish meeting night.’

As a priest, one of the joys of the summer months are the variety of saints that we encounter through the weekly calendar. For instance, this coming week, we celebrate St. Benedict of Nursia (July 11), St. Kateri Tekakwitha (July 14), and St. Bonaventure (July 15). It is such a lovely and varied group of three saints, who can all teach us something about life in the Church today.

Hard to imagine, our country is 240 years old this week! As we celebrate our nation’s independence from Britain, I think back on the events that led to the foundations of our country and the great men and women who worked so hard to build what we now have. It does cause a swell of pride in what we have and in who we are; and I look forward to celebrating our country in a few weeks as all eyes turn towards Rio and the Summer Olympics.

Recently, I received the dreaded Jury Summons in the mail. As I think we would all do, my first inclination was to think ‘I am busy enough, I don’t have time for this!’ I even posted the summons on Instagram with the wry caption, ‘Not exactly what I was looking for in today’s mail…’ A comment was left: ‘Wait, isn’t that a violation of church and state?’

Nope, it is not. As priests, we are still members of society and so this Monday I have to report to the Hamilton County Courthouse to serve our community as a juror. And as I write this a few weeks ahead of time, I am actually looking forward to it! (Now, ask me as this is printed and see if this is still the same…)

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
