We live in an increasingly interconnected world. Late last week as I write this, a gasoline pipeline in Alabama crippled fuel supplies across the Southeast. And while all potential steps are being taken to avoid major impacts, the shortage is being felt in a wide swath of our country. So far, it has not impacted us here…

As we advance further into the global age, it strikes me how the world continues to grow more and more interconnected. Things that happen in Asia have an impact on us here in Cincinnati.

As we gather today, the Church celebrates ‘Catechetical Sunday’ in recognition of the new academic year and the time of year when many of our instructional programs get back off the ground after the summer holidays. And while we have Faith Formation and Youth directors at both parishes (and wonderful assistants who support them!), there is also a recognition that the catechetical formation of our young people is much too important to leave to just a few contact points throughout the year. We all share in the responsibility of forming and training our young people in the ways of the faith!

Growing up, I can remember my parents talking about where they were when President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. To my young mind, it was remarkable that they could remember all the details of that day, even down to what they were wearing to school.

The closest thing I could liken it to was the Challenger explosion in 1986. I was in third grade and we were all watching because the teacher Christa McAuliffe was on board and was to be the first teacher in space. But my memories of that day are vague and I do not remember all of the specifics.

However, today, as we gather, I can remember so many exact details of where I was and what I was doing fifteen years ago, as my parents can of that fateful November day in 1963.

I think, as Catholics, we often talk about prayer, but we rarely give actual teachings on how to pray. I think we all expect that we have some sort of prayer life or communication with God, but in my conversations, it seems that everyone also agrees that their prayer life could also be better.

While there are many, many books about prayer; it is hard to know which are good books to follow and which ones might lead you astray. As such, my first recommendation for those who are seeking to grow in their prayer life is to turn to the Catechism of the Catholic Church! Built in four sections: The Profession of Faith; The Celebration of the Christian Mystery; Life in Christ; and Christian Prayer; the Catechism is the foundational book that every Catholic should own and should have some basic familiarity with.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
