This week, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, a chance to take a step back and to examine why we commit the resources, time and energy to forming and shaping our young people to be disciples of Christ. To begin this reflection, however, it is important to note that we are not in the business of education solely because the students are Catholic, but primarily because we are Catholic: it is part and parcel to who we are as a parish community that we ensure the dynamic and personal education of young people in our midst. Therefore, the responsibility of supporting a Catholic School is not just for the families that avail themselves of that opportunity, but it is the responsibility and task of the entire parish.

From January 9 to the 12th, I had the opportunity to attend the Truth and Love Conference in Phoenix, Arizona (and I have to admit, of all the times to attend a conference, mid-January is about the top of that list, behind perhaps only late February so you could catch a spring training game or three!) Sponsored by Courage, International, Our Sunday Visitor and the Diocese of Phoenix; the conference was for pastoral ministers, priests, and mental health professionals who work in the Church’s ministry and support to those who experience Same Sex Attraction and/or types of gender dysphoria.

As the cost of funerals unfortunately continues to rise, the option to have a loved one’s body cremated has become more and more popular. Originally banned to Catholics in the 1917 Code of Canon Law, this practice was allowed beginning in the 1963 and codified by the New Code of Canon Law in 1982. Yet there are some ongoing concerns that are reflected in this practice.

Because of the growing popularity and because of growing confusion on what the Church teaches in regards to the practice of cremation, the Vatican issued a clarification on the practice this past August 15, appropriately the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. While this Instruction did not establish any new practice or procedure, I thought it would be helpful to once again clarify the Church’s teaching in regards to this practice for Catholics today. I also address this topic because of the ongoing rise of the practice in these two parishes, but not because of particular instance where these instructions were blatantly violated.

This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord; the commemoration of the Magi from the East bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Lord as an offering for the New Born King of the Jews. Ancient prophecies of kings and queens from Sheba and points afar coming to welcome this new born king abound in the Old Covenant; again all those threads introduced long ago are being woven together into this new, beautiful tapestry that Christ continues to weave to our day.

As we gather today to celebrate the secular New Year, we also celebrate several different feasts within the context of the Church as well: We continue to bask in the glow of New Born King as we close the Octave of Christmas. (Christmas is so important, we extend the celebration in the Church over eight days!) Today is also the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God; a day to celebrate Mary’s unique role in the economy of salvation as the ‘Theotokos,’ or God Bearer. Bringing all of these diverse celebrations together, we also acknowledge today as the World Day of Prayer for Peace. Whew, putting all this together makes me tired just thinking about it!

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
