I’m not sure why, but I continue to be surprised by the awesomeness of the Lord. I’m writing this later than I normally do because of the preparations I had to make for the Fortieth Anniversary Celebrations that happened over the past weekend for St. John Neumann. When Fr. Leo reached out to me and suggested coming here and being a part of the celebrations, I had no idea what to expect. I knew he was high energy, but wowzers, he even stunned me!

His joy for life in infectious, and his cooking skills are terrific! Yet, he could tie it all back to the beauty and power and truth of the Gospel. A little ingredient step as simple as adding salt to a dish becomes a great reflection on how Jesus desires to spice our life!

As I write this, it is about 1:00 on Saturday, January 13, and I am sitting in my office at Corpus Christi preparing for the First Communion Parent Meeting that takes place in a few hours followed by the afternoon confession and Mass. We have just completed the second funeral here in as many days and have a few more on the calendar for next week, as well. This is also the day after the most recent round of the ‘Cincinnati Snowpacalypse!’ which saw rain transition into ice which transitioned into a few inches of snow left on the ground by early Saturday morning.

I think I am getting a reputation for being a home for orphan seminarians, as I am glad to welcome another man in formation towards the priesthood to our pastoral region! Mr. Stephen Codekas is currently completing his undergraduate studies prior to enrolling full time, God willing, in First Theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary this coming fall. He had been living at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Anderson Township over the last several months, but the sabbatical of Fr. Thomas Kreidler necessitated a temporary change of location for Stephen; so he will be with us for the months of January, February and March.

As the Great American Baking Show was preparing to air, I received an unexpected message from a brother priest: Fr. Leo Patalinghug of Baltimore, Maryland. He reached out to root me on and to congratulate me on joining the ranks of televised cooking priests! He has a regular show on EWTN called ‘Grace Before Meals’ and was featured on one episode of ‘Throwdown with Bobby Flay’ in which he took on the Iron Chef and won in a head to head battle.

The afternoon prior to the show airing, Fr. Leo called with a proposal: ‘Let’s build on the momentum of this!’ and we started throwing ideas and times back and forth. Because of his schedule of travel and parish missions, he only had one weekend available: January 20. While he wanted me to fly out to Baltimore to do something there, I proposed an alternative: that is the day we observe the parish feast St. John Neumann, can that ‘something’ happen here instead? And he agreed!

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
