Perhaps the biggest challenge that we face to our own ongoing conversion is the recognition of our blind spots to conversion. If we never learn of the areas where we need to change, we will never actually try to change them. This is one of the reasons the Church exhorts a daily examination of conscience, as this can be a great tool to help recognize these blind spots. Having a list of questions can be a great asset in performing this task, as well, because even as a priest, I sometimes struggle with my own spiritual life to both recognize and then implement the needed changes for me to become close to whom God wants me to become.

And so it begins, the long trek of forty days through the wilderness of Lent. The period of Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving has begun so that we can approach the great High Holy Days of the Triduum and Easter with hearts made new and sprits refreshed.

This year, we are journeying through the Gospel of St. Mark. What always strikes me in this Gospel in particular is the sense of ‘hurry.’ It seems as if every line of the Gospel has a sense of ‘and then Jesus did this…’ immediately followed by ‘and then He did that…’ with another trip here and another miracle there. St. Mark does not include the long discourses and speeches that the other three Gospel writers include, Jesus is too much a man of action in this Gospel.

Matthew 25 gives us a clear indication of our role and responsibility as disciples of Christ. In that chapter, Jesus tells those who have been welcomed into the paradise that they are there because they were able to recognize His presence in those who were poor, needy, naked, alone and imprisoned. They put their faith into action and did it all not because of a desire for a reward, but because it just flowed from who they were and their living relationship with the Lord.

From my first moments in these two parishes, I have been amazed at the number of ways that these things are done in and around the parish. Our Pastoral Area Food Pantry is staffed by an army of volunteers who give so generously of their time. (Not to mention that the food pantry is stocked by so many donations that come in from parishioners!) The St. Vincent de Paul Society serves neighbors in need and helps to address the root causes of what precipitated the call into the society. The Men’s Organization and the Knights of Columbus assist with various projects around the neighborhood.

This weekend, we close Catholic Schools Week. We spent the last week celebrating and acknowledging the great work that is done in our Catholic school system and we continue to ask God to bless the work of the staff, teachers and students at all our Catholic schools.

We are blessed at these two parishes to be served by the Catholic School at St. John the Baptist, as well. I continue to be amazed and gratified by the involvement of Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann in the parish school, as well. Since I have been here, the president of the school board has come from these two parishes. Frequently, the PTO leadership has also come from Corpus and St. John Neumann, as well. When I visit the school, I see many of our parents present for different activities; all of this despite the parish school being located at a different campus than ours. Again, I am greatly edified!

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
