Celebration of Catholic Schools Week

This weekend, we close Catholic Schools Week. We spent the last week celebrating and acknowledging the great work that is done in our Catholic school system and we continue to ask God to bless the work of the staff, teachers and students at all our Catholic schools.

We are blessed at these two parishes to be served by the Catholic School at St. John the Baptist, as well. I continue to be amazed and gratified by the involvement of Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann in the parish school, as well. Since I have been here, the president of the school board has come from these two parishes. Frequently, the PTO leadership has also come from Corpus and St. John Neumann, as well. When I visit the school, I see many of our parents present for different activities; all of this despite the parish school being located at a different campus than ours. Again, I am greatly edified!

The benefit of a Catholic school is that we focus on forming the whole person as a disciple of Christ. Certainly this is not a discredit to the very good public schools we have in our area (I am a proud product of a public school system, after all!) and we have many students and invested parents and teachers in our local public school systems, as well. The difference is the added dimension that comes from being able to discuss the faith and the purpose of life: ‘to become who Jesus intends for us to become’ that sets Catholic schools apart from other school systems.

In particular this year, I would like to highlight the good work of Ms. Catie Blum, a parishioner at Corpus Christi, who is retiring from the position of principal at St. John the Baptist School after forty years of service to Catholic Education. Her time as both teacher and administrator has spanned several generations of students and she has adapted well to the needs and requirements of the position over the years. On behalf of all the students, staff and administration, I wish her well as she transitions into a new stage of life!

With Ms. Blum’s announcement of her pending retirement on January 11, Fr. Tim Kallaher and I began the process of selecting her replacement. We have identified a search committee of six individuals who collectively represent the teachers and each of the parishes invested in the school. The position was listed on the Archdiocese of Cincinnati job posting board shortly after Ms. Blum’s announcement and we have already begun to receive applications for the position. We hope to have the position filled and in place prior to Easter and I humbly ask for the prayers of all the parishioners that the Holy Spirit may guide this process.

As many of you know, Fr. Tim is also retiring from the office of Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish as of June 30. Before anyone asks, my desire is to remain at Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann, and I will communicate as such to both Archbishop Schnurr and Bishop Binzer! The process to name Fr. Tim’s replacement has already begun and the ‘open listing’ of available slots for priests should be published soon.

Please continue to pray for the Spirit’s wisdom and guidance in this process and as information is able to be shared, I will share it in this space.

God Bless

Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
