Spring is here, the flowers have bloomed, and Jesus is Resurrected!

As I write this, it is ‘hopefully’ the last snow day of the year. March 21, a day after Spring started, and there is enough snow for schools to be closed and driving to be treacherous one last time, again, ‘hopefully!’ It does bring to mind one Easter in my childhood when we had enough snow to make an Easter Snow Bunny in the front yard. I think I must have been only five at the oldest, as I remember it more from pictures than from the actual event.

While that is a happy and joyous memory of my own childhood, this snowfall had me thinking about Easter and the challenge of entering more freely into the promise of Eternal Life guaranteed by the Resurrection of Christ. Perhaps, most specifically, I am thinking about the struggle to enter into that promise, as Spring seems to be struggling to throw off the last vestiges of Winter.

It can be strange, at times, to embrace that struggle. When we are going along, minding our own business, we can think everything is running smoothly and easily; the skis are gently sliding across the snow, to continue the analogy. But then there is that spare thought that occurs during Lent: ‘I should work more on my relationship with God.’

Perhaps that thought brings to mind a specific sin which has been difficult to root out. Perhaps it is just a gentle invitation into silence or prayer; or service to a loved one, etc. When we first look at that issue, the thought can be, ‘oh, this will be simple!’

And that is when the real battle begins. That is where the call to die to self to live in Christ begins. Because one thing I know: the evil one does not want you to make even that little step of progress. So he is going to throw snow in the face of the oncoming Spring. A relapse occurs and the temptation is to give in, put away the baseball mitt and just go skiing instead.

But Spring is here, the flowers have bloomed, and Jesus is Resurrected!

This changes everything! This gives us the strength and grace and ability to overcome and find freedom. Jesus offered Himself so that you could be free in Him! Free to allow the sun to shine a little more brightly, a little longer each day, to allow the grass to hopefully green up as the world comes back alive, slowly, but surely.

As we enter into the joy of the Easter Season, spend the next fifty days in the glory and power of the Resurrection so that your desire to be more closely aligned with Jesus might grow stronger in your hearts and minds and resolutions!

And finally, Spring might just stay here for good!

A Blessed Easter to you and your families and friends!

God Bless

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
