Welcome Scott Morgan and Stephen Codekas

May 27

On May 19, four men were ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ for service to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. I worked with all four as they entered seminary formation and am proud of the men they have become and that they are now a brother priest to me! It is always an exciting day to celebrate ordinations to the priesthood, as it is the culmination of a long and sometimes arduous journey for the men, but is also a day of great rejoicing for the Archdiocese as we celebrate the life and ministry of Jesus in the vocation of those being ordained to serve at the altar.

As we celebrate ordinations, however, I am also reminded of a line that Fr. Ted Ross, SJ, would often say to Fr. David Sunberg (whom I lived with prior to coming to these parishes): ‘The work of forming a man into the priesthood is too important to leave to just the seminary!’ To that end, Fr. Sunberg would have two or three men staying with him at Our Lady of Lourdes every summer, and it was a wonderful sense of community for him, as well as a great opportunity for the seminarians to experience a little taste of parish life during their summer break.

This summer, I am glad to again be housing two seminarians: Scott Morgan and Stephen Codekas. Scott has just finished Second Theology and will be interning at St. Antoninus in Western Hills over the next academic year. This summer, he will be working as an intern at Ruah Woods to assist with the development of their Theology of the Body programming. Stephen is completing his undergraduate degree prior to entering First Theology in a year’s time, so he will be staying with me for the next fifteen or so months. (Pray for him as he has to deal with me in such a way!)

Scott is originally from Corbin, Kentucky, and began formation towards the priesthood for the Diocese of Lexington, but felt a call here to the Archdiocese and transferred over while completing his college degree at the Pontifical College Josephinum. He worked for a time as a funeral director and brings a great pastoral sense to his ministry.

Stephen is originally from Palm Springs, California; and discerned with a number of other religious communities and dioceses prior to coming to Cincinnati. After forming a friendship with a current Cincinnati seminarian from a previous discernment retreat, he made contact here and has been welcomed as a brother to the men in formation. Stephen is doing coursework to finish his undergraduate degree, which will keep him occupied while he is here.

Please join me in welcoming these two men to the pastoral region and continue to pray for all those in formation to the priesthood and religious and consecrated life!

God Bless,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
