Small Changes

It is often said that, as Catholics, we think in decades and centuries while the rest of the world thinks in months and years. We tend to be a little resistant to change, after all. But, alas, things do change every now and again. Over the next few months, there are some small changes that will happen for a time prior to returning to our regularly scheduled program, but it might take a bit of time to explain…

During September, October and November, Fr. Tom McCarthy of St. Ann, Groesbeck, is going to be taking time away for his sabbatical; as I took time away three years ago. He is taking time for prayer and study and little bit of travel. However, because of this, he needed a priest to step in and assist the parish while he is away during those three months.

In order to help him gain more pastoral experience, Fr. McCarthy asked Fr. Tom Wray to cover St. Ann’s in his absence. With the agreement of Bishop Binzer, who is responsible for priest personnel matters, this seemed like a good assignment for all involved. For those three months, Fr. Wray will be covering the Sunday Masses at St. Ann’s, as well as overseeing staff meetings and covering a fair number of the weekday Masses, too.

That opened up the weekend assistant spot here at St. John Neumann and Corpus Christi; and I am glad to say that Fr. Tom Snodgrass has agreed to assist us here! (Yes, that is three ‘Frs. Tom’ so far in this article, it gets a little confusing!) Fr. Snodgrass has just retired from his position as Assistant Chancellor downtown, with primary responsibilities for marriage permissions. Over the last few years, he has assisted on Sundays at St. Ann’s, he has also assisted at St. Anne, Hamilton, and Sacred Heart, Fairfield, as well.

I am glad he is coming to help us here as I lived with him at the Cathedral for my first three years as Vocation Director and am glad to call him a friend. I know he is glad to be continuing in this area of the world, too, as he is originally from this area, having graduated from LaSalle High School prior to entering seminary. (Which created a friendly rivalry between him and I with the red vs. the purple.)

Fr. Snodgrass is a good and holy priest who takes great care with his preaching and concern for the people of God. He has recently assisted at both parishes to cover for absences and assures me that he is looking forward to getting to know everyone during these three months as well.

Please help him feel welcome, as you do to both me and Fr. Wray!

Come December, when Fr. McCarthy returns from his sabbatical, Fr. Wray will be returning to his position as weekend assistant here at St. John Neumann and Corpus Christi. Fr. Snodgrass will then be on the ‘Senior Fill in Network’ to cover for priests who are away for a weekend, etc.

Please continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and the consecrated life. It is a good life, one filled with many changes; but one in which we are constantly filled with the grace of God in meeting new people and being a part of the lives of our parishioners.

God Bless,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
