Current State in the Roman Curia

Last weekend, the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States (the Nuncio is akin to the Holy See’s official diplomatic representative to the various countries with whom the Vatican City State has diplomatic ties), Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò released a statement very critical of the current state of affairs within the Hierarchy of the United States and in the Roman Curia. It has the potential to be one of the most groundbreaking documents within the Church of this century, at least.

Since the release of this document, there have been many commentators who have argued all aspects of the document from: ‘it was a political document because he and the Holy Father are political enemies’ to ‘every person named in the document should resign immediately!’

As is usual in Church circles the truth most likely lies somewhere in the middle. Surprisingly, the most reasoned response that I found was on Twitter, which is not typically known to have reasoned responses: ‘The claims made in this document are very serious and must be taken with a sense of gravity. They must be explored and those verified must be acted upon.’

I share this sentiment, exactly.

What has come to light over the last few weeks is that there are members of the Church hierarchy (bishops and priests alike!) who have failed to live up to the expectations that Jesus and the Church set out for us. Admittedly, while we all fail to some extent because we are all sinners, some have taken advantage of their positions of power and authority to wield undue influence on the processes and procedures of the Church. Those who have exerted this undue influence should be removed.

But as we were talking this morning as I write this, when these things happen, it can be so easy to only look at these massive warts and failings in the Church on the part of her leadership. It is important to also keep an eye on the good things that are happening because of the Church’s presence in the world.

As Catholics, we run the largest networks of hospitals in this country. We teach large numbers of students from pre-school through the university systems. We do more to serve the poor and underprivileged than any other organization, see our Pastoral Area Food Pantry, for instance. When natural disasters wreak havoc, the Church is often the first to mobilize in response. And when the diplomatic structures of the Church work well, miracles can truly happen: thinking back to the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe without a shot being fired is truly awe inspiring!

Yes, the Church is hurting right now because of the failings of her leadership. Yet, the promise that Jesus made at His Resurrection is still enforce: He is with us always! In moments of trial or despair, let us turn back to Him so that He can bring about the healing we all need.

God Bless,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
