Feast of Christ the King

Nov 25

As we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King this weekend, I always think this is a difficult feast for us in the United States to celebrate; after all, the foundations of our country involved throwing off the tyranny of a far off king to establish a democracy unlike anything else seen in the world at the time. Yet, we still celebrate and honor Jesus as our King, not only of our hearts and minds, but also of the entire universe all as well.

When we recognize that Jesus is the Lord and King of our life, unlike a political king who can cause so much turmoil and angst (See the Lord’s warnings to Samuel when the Israel demanded a king like all the other nations…); Jesus brings us to a greater depth and sense of the beauty of life. As Pope Benedict urged young people at World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany, to give yourselves to Christ is to lose nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. In fact, I would argue that to give ourselves to Christ, to constantly acknowledge that He truly is the Lord of my life is to embrace everything that makes life free, beautiful and great!

Because Jesus is a King unlike any other. He is not a king that sits on a glorious throne, He is a king that reigns from the throne of the Cross. He is a king that is able to enter into and transform the weaknesses of His subjects, because He has endured all the faults and failings that come with those weaknesses, even though He never sinned.

As we celebrate this great feast that ends the Liturgical year, there is this constant awareness that finding our identity in Christ, finding our peace in Jesus, filling our hearts with His presence; this is what makes our lives beautiful. These are the things that we long for at the deepest core of our beings. Might we all have the courage and strength to lay down our lives that He might reign in us!

On a slightly less theological level and way more practical, this time of year, there are some practical things to keep in mind when it comes to attending Mass and the weather. Please be safe when attempting to get to Mass! If the roads are icy and/or snowy, your obligation to attend is mitigated! Especially for weekday Masses, there may be times when I cannot get down to Corpus, or there may be times when the parking lots just cannot get cleared in time for morning Mass and it is much safer to stay home!

A general rule of thumb: if the school is canceled, be wary. If there is a snow emergency (especially during the morning hours!), weekday Mass will likely not happen. Sunday Masses, we always strive to do our best, but weather can be unpredictable. If we cancel Masses on Sunday, it will be published on local media outlets and posted to the parish Facebook pages.

I know many people like to attend Mass when they provided the intention or when the intention is for a loved one. If you are prevented from attending that Mass due to weather, or that Mass is canceled due to weather, we will gladly reschedule that Mass intention. Please just call the parish office.

I hope all this makes sense, if you have any question, please see me or any member of the parish staff.

God Bless,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Deacon Ron answers your questions.

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
