Vibrant & Thriving Parish

In talking with some of my brother priests, we are always trying to compare the viability of parishes and address the question of what makes for a vibrant and thriving parish. We have come up with so many variables, it is hard to keep track of what we have all said. But one major factor that shows the health of a parish is how parishioners support ‘extra’ efforts in the parish. Over the last few weeks, we have had quite a number of ‘extra’ events in these two parishes, and you have all shown wonderful and super support for them all!

Two of the major ‘extra’ events happen through our Pastoral Area Food Pantry. Prior to Thanksgiving, the amount of support given to families who need a boost is incredible. I think the count this year was well over 300 turkeys were given out, in addition to fixings for a full thanksgiving meal.

While I was not able to help this year due to getting a call to the hospital, it is an incredible process to witness. I know the leaders of the food pantry work very hard to put it all together, but they could not do it without the support and donations of parishioners.

Without a break in their regular programming, the food pantry volunteers step right back at it with the Christmas support programming. Along with St. John the Baptist, we are able to help so many families who need that extra boost to make Christmas something special. Again, while the food pantry coordinates and organizes those efforts, they would not be able to execute it without the help and assistance of so many people: from those who supply gifts, to those who organize and put them back together in family bundles, even to those who transport those gifts from St. John Neumann back over to Corpus Christi. It is humbling and inspiring to see the response of parishioners to our neighbors in need.

One last ‘extra’ event that was new this year and, again, exceeded expectations. On November 27, both parishes participated in I Give Catholic for the first time on ‘Giving Tuesday.’ Both parishes exceeded the expectations tremendously! So much so, that both were in the top three parishes in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in the amount raised that day, which earned both parishes an extra $1,000 towards our projects! Our parish grade school at St. John the Baptist won an award for being one of the top two grade schools, too!

Once again, your generosity and support of the efforts in and around the parish continue to show the life that these two parishes have and share so generously with those around us. As parish staffs, we strive to be good and capable stewards of the treasures you have entrusted to us, but I can honestly say that your generous support gives us great inspiration to do as much as we can with the treasure entrusted to our care.

As we approach the great feast of Our Lord’s birth, may He richly reward you all for your generosity in so many ways.

God bless,

Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
