The Most Holy Trinity

This is one of the hardest weekends to write about and to preach about. There are many things that can be said of the Holy Trinity, yet nearly all of them have some aspect of ‘not quite right’ about them, too! Among priests, we often joke that this weekend should be called ‘Heresy Sunday,’ because it is the weekend that the most heresies (false teachings) are delivered from the pulpit than any other weekend of the year.

But we have a way to understand the Trinity, because in and of Himself, God is a relationship of persons. And we grow up and live in constant relationship with other persons. We know our mother first, even before we are born. We can hear our father’s voice from a young age. Siblings and friends, aunts and uncles, cousins, all start to round out our experiences and our relationships. And it is so wonderful when those relationships continue to grow and expand and be added to.

Recently, my first Great Niece was born, and I was over the moon. But the most exciting part of it all: many of my family were present when our grandmother got to meet her first Great Great Grandchild! I think we were nearly all a little misty eyed at the sight! (Someone must have been cutting onions, I think…)

What a relationship to see: a wonderful woman who has given birth to so much life: six children, 23 grandchildren, 54 (and counting!) great grandchildren and now her first Great Great Grandchild! An openness to life and an embrace of life is returned so many many times over!

One thing I do recognize is that my family is unique in this approach. Most families are much smaller, and some are unable to share in this same fruitfulness. That does not mean that one family is favored by God over another, rather that the situation is just different. And for those who experience difficulty (and every family does in their own way!), looking towards the peace and harmony of the Inner Life of the Holy Trinity can give us an insight into what God intended for family life; giving us all the perfection to aim for.

Please know of my prayers for you, as I very much consider all the parishioners at Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann to be my family now as well; relationships have grown and expanded. And I recognize how truly blessed I am to be in these wonderful parishes!

In Christ,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
