Good Example or Role Model

The longer I have worked with Courage, the more I have realized that the Five Goals of Courage are a model of how to grow in virtue and holiness. In particular, for this week, I would like to look at the last of the five goals: to be a good example and/or a role model for others to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Every week as we meet, I think the same thing as we all sometimes struggle to come up with a good example from the last few days: We are all probably better role models than we think we are, but we could also always be a better example than we actually are! There is always room for growth.

This notion of being a good example and a role model in the faith crosses so many areas of life, too. At our recent priest convocation, it was brought up again: in our culture today, there is a stronger testimony from witnesses than to just teachers. Or to put another way, unless one’s pattern of life does not conform to that person’s testimony and evangelization, the witness goes unheard.

So how do we go about growing in the ability to be a better example and role model of the faith? This is a never ending journey that is for sure! But I think it starts with a daily prayer and a daily examination of conscience. This does not have to be a long drawn out affair, but simply two questions that are asked while preparing for the end of the day: ‘How did I see and respond to Jesus today? How did I miss His invitation to respond today?’

By starting to look for those opportunities daily, the number of times one can claim to be a ‘good example’ or ‘role model’ in the faith seem beyond count throughout the day.

But I realize that my opportunities are way different than yours, and your opportunities rely on so many different factors: a mom who stays at home with young children faces those options in attempting to help her children recognize God in their lives; a corporate executive faces those options by how he or she makes choices for the priorities of the company and its employees. And there is such a range in between! But no matter the journey or the choices, there is always the option to choose holiness and to allow Jesus to work through you.

And again, the beauty of Ordinary Time is to allow those small options and opportunities to grow into something more throughout the summer months. Hopefully, what once seemed a dauntless task of choosing that holiness of life will become second nature as it just becomes routine and part and parcel of all of our daily lives.

How are you a good example and role model of the faith? What are the areas in which you succeed naturally?  What are the areas that you can begin today to improve?

God Bless

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
