Special Days & Celebrations

This weekend, we celebrate Labor Day here in the United States, celebrating the achievements of the American worker.  And on Labor Day, here in the US, many Catholic churches offer mass for the sanctification of human labor, though this is a government holiday.  (Mass this year for our pastoral area is being celebrated on September 4th at 10am at Corpus Christi).

We have many special days and celebrations throughout the church year as well. The first to come to mind would be Christmas and Easter.  Or maybe you think of other Holy Days of Obligation, such as the Feast of the Assumption we just celebrated on August 15th, or All Saints Day on November 1st.

Other days of our church calendar celebrate saints and even events of our church.  On August 25, we celebrated the Queenship of Mary, and this date was chosen because it is the octave of the Feast of the Assumption.  We also celebrate the Feast of Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome) on November 9th.   Sometimes we celebrate special feast days of Mary, such as Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11th.   This week, we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8th, and the feast day of St. Peter Claver on September 9th.  Masses on those days include special prayers about the feast or saint.  The feast day of a saint is often the date of their death.  We recognize these saints on these special days to remind ourselves of our ultimate goal as well, to be a saint.  They are our models of faith.

And how do you find out these special days of the church year?  Some Catholic stores sell calendars with the feast days listed, or purchase a daily missal which has the dates with the special prayers included.  Websites can also be a helpful resource, such as usccb.org (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops), or use one of the many phone apps available, such as Laudate or iMissal Catholic.

Celebrate these feast days and learn just a little bit more of the vibrant history of the church.

God bless,

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
