The Catholic Hipster Handbook

Oct 1

About a year ago now, I was given an opportunity to contribute to a new effort at evangelization by several friends who are all organized around twitter and other social media platforms. What started as a website run by Tommy Tighe blossomed into a full-grown book: “The Catholic Hipster Handbook: Rediscovering Cool Saints, Forgotten Prayers, and Other Weird But Sacred Stuff,” which was just published by Ave Maria Press out of Notre Dame, Indiana.

Admittedly, the term ‘Catholic Hipster’ needs a bit of an explanation, eh? From the book blurb: ‘Being a Catholic Hipster is all about an attitude--an attitude grounded in being part of a countercultural community of believers dedicated to something bigger than themselves in a world dominated by self-centeredness. It's about yearning to learn more about the faith by seeking out "Catholic cool"--overlooked saints, forgotten prayers and feast days, and traditional practices long set aside by mainstream believers.’

Organized into four main categories: Rediscover the… Attitude, Stuff, Life, and Attraction; the book covers such diverse topics as ‘Beards are Catholic?’ Blogs and Social Media, Christian Music, Devotion to Mary, Confession, Daily Mass, etc.; the book is designed for young adults, but I feel like most everyone will get something out of the book. And to be clear, this is not a book of in depth theology and discourse, it is not preachy or judgy or divisive; it is a light hearted and joyous conversation with our culture and how we can speak the truth of the Gospel into the deeper corners of our world.

For example, Sr. Brittany Harrison, of the Salesian Sisters of St. Don Bosco, begins the book with a  reflection of what does it mean to be redeemed in Christ, taking as her starting point an excerpt from St. Peter’s First Letter: ‘You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9)’ She reflects that because of what Jesus has done for us, we should have this great confidence to fight the temptations of the evil and live in the joy and power of the Gospel every day, recognizing that we wear an imperishable crown of righteousness due to our baptism into Christ Jesus.

Contributors to the book range from young mothers to single men to religious sisters and a priest (yours truly!). They are cradle Catholics and converts to the faith. What unites us all is a deep joy in the Faith and a desire to share that joy with the people we meet. The book is available on Amazon as either a paperback or kindle version for just $12.00. And for the curious, I contributed chapters on ‘Why Beards are Catholic,’ ‘Daily Mass,’ and ‘Having Priest Friends.’

As Tommy’s boys say on The Catholic Hipster Podcast, ‘I hope you like it!’

God Bless,

Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
