Leadership within the School

Nov 5

As I write this, I just came back to the office at Corpus Christi after Mass with the fifth grade students at St. John the Baptist School. I have to admit celebrating Mass at the school with children from both parishes and from St. John the Baptist is a particular highlight of my week; when it is Mass with just one class, the fun just gets increased, too!

As pastor of Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann, I am very proud of the involvement of parishioners in the administration and running of the school at St. John the Baptist. Since the realignment in 2008, parishioners from both parishes have served on the School Board, frequently in that period, parishioners from either Corpus Christi or St. John Neumann have served as president and vice-president of the board. (Currently, Angela Dengel from St. John Neumann serves in this capacity, and she inherited the reigns from Steve Williams of Corpus Christi.)

This leadership role is not limited to the parents. Students from both parishes often serve in leadership on the Student Council as well. Currently, Blaise Dengel (from SJN) and Erin McLaughlin (from CC) both serve in this capacity. Despite being roughly only a quarter of the student population, young people from both parishes continue to make a positive impact on the school and their classmates.

At this point, I would also be very remiss in failing to mention that Ms. Catie Blum, who serves the school community as Principal, is also a parishioner! She and I meet on a regular basis to compare notes on how to improve life at the school and to stress the importance of formation way beyond just academic education. A Catholic School is a place to form the heart, the mind, the soul and the body in the gifts and talents that God has bestowed on the individual.

Our staff members also take an active role in this formation. Ms. McLaughlin from Corpus Christi is frequently at the school to work with the students who will be lecturing at Mass and help coordinate the servers for the various all school and class Masses.

There are so many other ways that these two parishes support and encourage the operation of our Parish school at St. John the Baptist: from the PTO and Athletic Associations, to scouting (both boys and girls), to the many volunteer hours that are offered by our parishioners. It is a true source of joy and pride to me as a pastor to see your involvement at the School.

With the involvement of both Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann, our parish school continues to be a thrive and growing community. Please keep the school community in your prayers as they undergo the once every five year accreditation process. The initial steps look promising, and I know the school will come through with flying colors once again.

God Bless
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
