What Are Your Blessings...

This week, we celebrate Thanksgiving Day, which begins the annual rush towards Christmas. But first, we take time with family and friends to think back over the year and recognize the blessings that God has given to us throughout the past twelve months. And when we start to look for those blessings, we can see them all around.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share some blessings that I have experienced over the last twelve months:

·The two staffs that I work with are incredible. Their selfless giving of time and talent to all who come by the parish is a great inspiration to me. They pick up so many different items, often in ways that I am completely unaware, and do their work with grace and dignity. I sometimes feel like they could do so much more if I weren’t holding them back by my own weaknesses!

·Along with that, it is a true blessing to see how the staffs of Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann work together as one team in two locations. We meet together every few months and all the preparation that was done for these two parishes to share a pastor shows in how we are all able to work together. So many of my brother priests who are in similar situations of multiple parishes do not have this blessing, so I recognize how lucky I am!

·A final wrinkle along these lines is the blessing to work with St. John the Baptist parish and school in our ministry at Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann. The school continues to grow and thrive and the talents at the parish there also enrich our experiences here.

·I am so thankful for the contributions that our many parishioners make in so many ways: the Food Pantry, St. Vincent de Paul, contributions to the liturgical life of the parishes, the care and concern that is shown for the two campuses to make sure that they are welcoming for visitors, etc. It is easy to serve as pastor when so many parishioners take ownership of this spiritual home of yours!

·My family and friends are of great support to me, as well. My family is so fun and enjoyable, I wish I were able to spend more time with them! Friends help me as sounding boards for ideas I might have, help me refine homilies, and just sometimes when I need to unwind, they help make that happen.

·Between the two parishes, to have five deacons to assist is also a great benefit; and each deacon brings his own unique gifts to the ministry. Add to them the priests who regularly assist us on weekends, and we have a rich diversity of preachers and voices that help us all (me included!) to better understand how the Holy Spirit continues to guide who we are and what we do as communities of faith.

·Finally, I am blessed to have an excellent spiritual director. He knows when to challenge me to do better, he helps me to see things in a different light and is a kind and generous confessor to me, as well. He is certainly helping me to become the priest I need to be in order to lead these two communities closer to God.

There are so many other blessings that happen every day. As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope you are able to take some time to recognize those blessings God has bestowed on you over the last year as well!

In Christ,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
