Shortest Advent

Dec 3

This year is that rare year where the Fourth Sunday of Advent also happens to be Christmas Eve, making this the shortest that Advent can be. It presents us with some unique challenges for the year, as well. We have to fit what normally takes four weeks into essentially three, and it certainly places a crunch on the time available for decorations for Christmas Eve Masses, as well.

Luckily, we have known that this was coming and in consultation with a number of other priests in the area and after discussing this with both parish staffs, we have decided that for this one Sunday only (the morning of December 24), the Mass schedule will be as follows:

The anticipatory Vigil Masses for the Fourth Sunday of Advent will remain at 5:00 pm at both parishes, as normal. Sunday, December 24, the Masses for the morning observation of the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be combined into one: 9:30 am at Corpus Christi and 10:00 am at St. John Neumann. This is right between when the normal Sunday schedule is observed and allows more time for the Art and Environment committees to change the decorations from Advent to Christmas. (And we have wonderful teams at both Parishes that accomplish this great task!)

The Christmas schedule is as follows, as well:

Both Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann will hold 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm Vigil Masses for Christmas. Midnight Mass (at midnight!) will be held at St. John Neumann and Christmas Day Mass will be held at 10:00 am at Corpus Christi.

Now, I can already read some minds out there: ‘Aha! We can just hit up the 3:00 pm or the 5:30 pm and have it count for both obligations!’ (I know this, because my siblings have already asked me about it!) The answer to this question is a resounding, ‘No!’ The Church expects and exhorts that you attend a liturgy for both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and then a liturgy for the Solemnity of Christ’s Birth, aka Christmas.

After all, they are two dramatically different sets of prayers and readings: Advent is that time of preparation, while Christmas is the celebration. In particular, the prayers for the Fourth Sunday of Advent always resonate with me as a time of immediate preparation for Christmas, please do not short change or miss out on the graces that are available at both of these wonderful liturgies!

Again, just for the sake of ease, the Mass Schedule for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas is as follows:

Fourth Sunday of Advent:

·        5:00 PM on December 23, Mass at both Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann, as normally scheduled

·        9:30 AM on December 24: Mass at Corpus Christi

·        10:00 AM on December 24: Mass at St. John Neumann

The Solemnity of Christmas:

·        3:00 PM on December 24: Masses at both Corpus Christi and
St. John Neumann

·        5:30 PM on December 24: Masses at both Corpus Christi and St. John Neumann

·        Midnight December 25: Mass at St. John Neumann

·        10:00 AM December 25: Mass at Corpus Christi

Please pray for endurance for all those who contribute to such wonderful liturgical celebrations at both parishes.

God Bless,
Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
