I want to thank everyone who has come out to the watch parties, so far, for the Great American Baking Show. It has been tremendous fun and I am glad I can finally share my little secret with you all. In this whole process, I have gotten many questions about the show, why I auditioned, what all happened while I was away, and of course, many ‘I didn’t know you baked!’ comments! I’d like to take this space to answer a few of those comments.

The application process started in either late February or early March. A friend on Facebook sent me a link with the comment, ‘You should apply to this!’ And it was the application to the show! I thought it would take a few minutes, maybe up to twenty; but I finally finished it an hour and a half later! An email receipt came in a few days later, but I didn’t hear anything until mid-April. A call out of the blue and a Skype interview the next day, and I was on my way. If you remember back over the summer months and there were times when I disappeared without much explanation, it was often because of the application process for the show.

I heard I was on in mid-July and had six weeks to prepare twelve different recipes for the show until I left at the end of August. I think the staff enjoyed this part of the process the most, as I would bring in some of the preparatory bakes along the way! And I can’t say how supportive and encouraging the staff was in this process. In particular, Cindy and Patti took a major brunt in having to call priests to fill in for the Masses while I was away. I am very grateful to them, in particular!

That’s the ‘how’ I applied, but not the ‘why’ I thought it was a good thing. For one, it was a chance for me to show that priests are still human and we have our own interests and passions, obviously that includes Jesus and the Church; but we do many other things besides, too. Baking is just one of my all too many hobbies!

For another, it is a connection and a show of love to my family. Some of my most fond memories of childhood are my great-grandmother bringing over buckets of treats for Christmas, in particular. My sister Tricia and I would also request her Angel Food Cake for our birthdays, which were aptly named as they were heavenly! (I’m too scared to actually make an angel food cake, as I don’t want to ruin this memory of Great Grandma!)

Finally, I often joked that baking is cheaper than a therapist. (Don’t get me wrong, therapists are good, I just needed an outlet!) So much of what I do as a priest, I never see the end result. I never know how a homily is received, many couples I prepare for marriage go off into their own lives and I do not see them again, etc. This is a way for me to see a final product and feel fruitful in life and to share that joy with friends, family and now parishioners!

Thank you all for the prayers while I was away, I felt them every day. And I was praying for you and am so grateful for the support you have all given me, whether you knew it or not!

As we approach Christmas, may your kitchens fill with the heavenly aromas of well executed baked treats!

God Bless,

Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Re: Why do we place a white pall on the casket of the deceased at funeral Masses?
I have been wondering about that. Thank you for explaining it.
